May 1 Signifies Something Larger Than All Of Us, Join In On The Celebration
Happy May, everyone! It's May 1, and that means it's International Workers Day for billions of people across the globe, from Latin America to Africa, Europe, India, and China.
Here are some options that would be perfect for Instagram, Facebook, X, or TikTok. What better way to celebrate the day than by amplifying one of these brilliant quotes?
If you're off of work, you might find a march or demonstration planned in your area in honor of May 1st. There are events going on worldwide, many of them colliding with human rights for Palestine at this moment in time.
Social groups often hold smaller gatherings, such as picnics or meetups, on May 1, including in the United States. Check for events on social media or in your local news to find something near you.
In addition to simply posting a quote, as suggested earlier, you can join the larger conversation happening online around workers' rights. Millions are actively addressing the topic on forums and social networks, and all you have to do is search for the right terms to join the chat.
Whether it's a former union headquarters, a labor hall, or the site of a significant strike or protest, there are plenty of historical sites all around the world that would be interesting to visit on May 1. Check for sites that are near you, close enough for a drive or public transit trip, as these provide great opportunities for reflection and learning.
What better way to honor labor rights than by doing some labor yourself, giving up your time to help those who are in need and less fortunate? Volunteerism tends to boom on May 1 and it's the perfect day to volunteer.
Even if you can't be there personally, post your support online in solidarity with all of the movements and labor efforts happening today around the world.
So what are you waiting for? Get involved. It's a great day to do so and be part of something much larger than ourselves.
I went to a private Christian school for 7 years of my education and now I go to a private university as well. Middle school and high school for private school kids looks a little different than it does for those who go to public school. Though there were things that were annoying about going to a private school, it changed my life and these are 15 things I think if you went to a private school you can easily relate with.
Yes, uniforms. Do you remember that moment after you graduated and you were about to go off to college and you looked in your closet and smiled knowing you would never have to wear it ever again. But then you looked at you regular people clothes and cried because you didn't own enough to wear so some shopping had to be done. Though you hated those uniforms, it made getting ready in the morning very easy since there wasn't many options from which to choose.
Even if you had to pay every once and awhile these days meant freedom. You could finally wear something that was your style. It was nice to wear sweatpants or even jeans to school knowing that it was one day you could relax and look like yourself and not the same as everyone else.

To public school kids this is such a confusing topic because to them a class size in the teens is a mind boggling concept. You didn't have every class with those in your grade, but a majority of you grew up in the same classes together. This also meant that there was no such thing as a secret because you were all one big family. If anything happened in the morning at homeroom the whole school new about it by lunch time.
If anyone new came to your school they were welcomed with open arms. They were also the new mystery of the school and everyone wanted to know everything about them. It was like everyone in the class turned into the paparazzi trying to get the littlest details about the new kid. But, once the hype was over after a few weeks, they blended in with everyone else at school and found their place. Almost as if they had been there for several years, even if they didn't get some of the school's inside jokes, they quickly learned.

You went on way more field trips than your fellow public school counter parts, but it was often a rule that you still had to wear a uniform that day as well. For my Senior class trip I went to the Dominican Republic on a missions trip. My fellow friends at public school went to Disney…to say the least they were jealous of my trip. Just because you entered high school didn't mean you were too old for field trips. The small class sizes made it all to simple and easy to go on several of them a year.
Something I have never understood is why we could never wear clothing that showed our shoulders. On game days we were allowed to wear our uniform tops, but for track and basketball they were tank tops so we had to wear something over it. Shoulders are not attractive no matter what you say-- they're not a distraction for boys. This meant though, on dress down days you couldn't wear anything that showed your shoulder.
Playing one sport at your school meant you were pretty cool and well-known. Playing more than one made you a super star to everyone else, basically an olympic-athlete level is what it felt like sometimes, especially after a win. Though this happened often if you were an athlete, you played all three season due to the smallness of your school and limited athletic students. But you loved it and once you left school and didn't go on to play in college you didn't know what to do with your time because lets face it, you finally had free time and who wants to do homework when its nice outside.
Bible memory verses were something that we had to do for Bible class. In my school we would have six verse due every two weeks and we would eventually memorize several chapters in one book over the course of the year. This process turned into homework more than just learning it to learn. You would read it out loud a million times and write is a few times in the hopes that it would be perfect enough to get an A+ the next day when you had to recite it or write it. For once I just wanted to learn things that actually effected me and that I could use on a daily basis.
All those kids in National Honors Society complained they had to have 70 hours of community service, while you sat back and laughed because you did five or ten hours a quarter and you easily had more than 70 hours come your junior year to get accepted into National Honors Society. It was difficult to find something that your school would approve of and you could easily get it done. While it was a hassle, you learned a lot from whatever you were doing-- from helping the janitors, to watching kids on Sundays, or even sorting clothing and food for the homeless. You were making an impact whether you felt it in the moment or not.

Since you didn't have to live in the same town the school was located you could be a long ways away. This made it difficult to get there in the morning, which meant sometimes getting up before the sun was necessary. Also, if you wanted to hang out with your friends sometimes you could live over an hour from each other and it made it very difficult to plan things around a commute like that.

The rule that meant teachers would be coming up to you with rulers to check your skirts length. This also let them check on dress-down days on dress skirts and even shorts. Now I understand the rule of modesty, but I wonder if they had ever tried buying fashionable shorts that reside within three inches above the knee. It's nearly impossible, so it was just easier to not wear them at all. If you were a taller girl everyone was always checking your length because wow you had a lot more leg showing than other girls…little did they know it was because you had more leg to cover than the other girls.
Your public school friends didn't understand why you knew where your teachers lived and why they had even been to your house. Sometimes you were even friends with their kids and you would carpool together. Your teachers were a part of the family too and knew everything that was going on.

Saying goodbye to a fellow classmate was one of the hardest things you had to do. The class was already small and you were losing another person. It was someone you had probably known from kindergarten way back in the day. This was also difficult as the seniors graduated because you didn't know how different the school would be without the old crew back together.
Everyone knew everyone so if you had a crush on someone the entire school found out about it. The teachers even knew who was dating whom. It was awkward though, because most of them were people you had known since grade school and thinking about dating them was just gross. You were a family but sometimes it didn't stop those few couples who tried to make it work and then made it awkward for everyone when they broke up. Realizing that the school was small and they would still have to see each other till one of them graduated was even more awkward.

This is something that just occurred naturally since you were in a small private school-- everything was separated when you were younger. In the lunch room it was always a guys table and a girls table. On field trips the girls sat together and the guys sat together and there was no intermingling, not that the teachers would allow it. It always separated into groups like that, even if you were friends with everyone you always chose a side.
It’s summertime, and you’re home from college. No term papers. No exams. No professor chasing you, hell bent on making your life miserable for his or her enjoyment. It’s time relax! Yet, you’re at a pool party that your parents dragged you to (away from your sweet air conditioning and Netflix), and you are forced to socialize with your parents' friends. They all keep repeating the same, cliché phrase saying to “live life to the fullest! Your college years are the best of your life!” Many of you reading this already know that ...
What many don’t know is that there are always ways to live a fuller life. Remember back to high school English class. Remember those droning lectures from your teacher that went on and on about the celebrated words of old white guys, most of whom had been dead for many years? One of those old white guys was Ralph Waldo Emerson.
For those who might have been caught taking a snooze during that class, Emerson was a New England minister, philosopher and writer. In his essay titled "Self Reliance," many of his principles reflect those of the core Transcendentalist ideals. If a college student reads Emerson's essay closely enough, he will discover how Emerson proposes to live a "virtuous" and "self-reliant" lifestyle free of the maladies of modern society and free to explore oneself. Here are six selected passages from Emerson’s essay for any college student to apply to his or her life this summer, during college and beyond:
1. “Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string. Accept the place the divine providence has found for you, the society of your contemporaries, the connection of events.”

Life is unpredictable. It takes you down different roads, and at the end of each road, there may be a dead end or a detour. Sometimes the road may be a lonely one. Sometimes it may feel like your doing the wrong thing or you are not doing enough, whether it be studying for an exam or a fight with a friend. There may have been a time when the universe was working against you. Nevertheless, Emerson believe that things happen for a reason. Fate delivers challenges that we must overcome. The only way to overcome these obstacles is to trust in our ability; trust in the person we are and to trust that we did the best we could. Simply put: trust in yourself and trust in the type of person you are. Because if you are confident in yourself and your actions, then everything else life throws at you will seem all the less difficult.
2. “Virtues are, in the popular estimate, rather the exception than the rule. There is the man and his virtues. Men do what is called a good action, as some piece of courage or charity, much as they would pay a fine in expiation of daily non-appearance on parade. Their works are done as an apology or extenuation of their living in the world, — as invalids and the insane pay a high board.”
It’s easy to accomplish things in life and, in the end, just meet expectations. However, it takes a certain type of individual to step up and let his true character shine. Take for instance, a mother with two young children and is so immersed in dealing with them that she forgets she left her wallet on the counter at the grocery store. There is no rule that says you must return it. No one will know that you held onto it. The mother will think that she had just lost it. That is the rule. The virtue would be to return the wallet to the mother for no promise of reward or anything. It is simply because you felt it was the right thing to do so that the mother will be able to provide for her children. That is the virtue. Approach the complex maneuverings in life with the idea that there is always a higher alternative than what society dictates you should do as a minimum requirement.
3. “Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist. He who would gather immortal palms must not be hindered by the name of goodness, but must explore if it be goodness. Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind. Absolve you to yourself, and you shall have the suffrage of the world.”

It is easy to get caught up in popular trends. As a college student, it’s also popular to conform to the crowd and appear to belong. To do so results in living in a comfortable and safe social setting. Emerson rejects conformity and celebrates nonconformity, being different than what the crowd expects you to be. To live a fuller life, one must liberate himself from societal pressures and liberate his mind to be open to new ideas. With this liberation, he will win the admiration of the rest of the world. It’s what sets the CEOs apart from a fast food regional managers.
4. “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines. With consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do ... Is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood.”

There is no one right way to go about living a successful life. People change majors in college on a monthly basis. It’s also not bad to believe in something that no one else accepts. Hey, at least you’re thinking for yourself. Daring greatly or putting your faith in an idea that seems impossible already sets you apart from the rest of the herd. Let your fellow college peers snicker at your ideas. One day, it may be your name in the textbook their children are reading.
5. “The relations of the soul to the divine spirit are so pure, that it is profane to seek to interpose helps. It must be that when God [speaks] he should communicate, not one thing, but all things; should fill the world with his voice ... Whenever a mind is simple, and receives a divine wisdom, old things pass away, — means, teachers, texts, temples fall; it lives now, and absorbs past and future into the present hour. All things are made sacred by relation to it, — one as much as another.”

Human beings are naturally social animals. We rely on each other for friendship, kinship and relationships. But to broaden that, we are connected with the greater metaphysical universe. Nature and mankind live on the same planet, in the same galaxy of the same universe. Nature, in accordance with Transcendentalist thought, is the supreme governing authority in the universe that follows God’s law. There is a connection to everything, with the past acting as a cause and the future reflecting the effect. Appreciate all aspects of life on Earth and cherish the simple things rather than focus on the complicated few.
6. “If our young men miscarry in their first enterprises, they lose all heart. If the young merchant fails, men say he is ruined ... He walks abreast with his days, and feels no shame in not 'studying a profession,' for he does not postpone his life, but lives already. He has not one chance, but a hundred chances. Let a Stoic open the resources of man ... and that moment he acts from himself, tossing the laws, the books, idolatries, and customs out of the window, we pity him no more, but thank and revere him, — and that teacher shall restore the life of man to splendor, and make his name dear to all history.”

This passage is simple: never quit. Always try again. There is no one chance to get something right. Life provides opportunities for us to grow and to try and try again. Because we didn’t get into our first choice of school or we didn’t nail that internship doesn’t mean our lives are over. Instead of dwelling on those things, welcome the hundreds of possibilities that become open to you than you once thought before. It may take us thousands of tries, but in the end, we will each revel in our own success.
As the General Assembly convenes, here is the United Nations 101
For an organization that literally unites the nations, it amazes me how little is taught about the United Nations in schools, or at least where I went to school. It wasn't until I went to college and got a higher education that I learned the basics of the United Nations. I believe that every American should know at least the basics of what the United Nations does, especially since our country is one of the 5 permanent members, and what better day to do that than United Nations Day (today!). So here are the main "organs" of the United Nations:
The visual above is a much more complex look at the organs of the United Nations, and what we can expect from United Nations Day 2023 can be found below.
This is the theme for the 2023 United Nations Day and it stands for and symbolizes the collective efforts of nations to create a safer, fairer, and more sustainable future.
In a world faced with numerous challenges, the UN remains a source of inspiration, offering solutions and unity in times of crisis.
The United Nations serves as a critical forum for fostering collaboration and addressing these pressing challenges.
Each of the states (countries) in the United Nations is a member of the General Assembly. They make important decisions about peace and security. For something to get passed or at least given a second look it must get 2/3 votes.
The Security Council is much more powerful than the General Assembly. It is made up of 5 permeant members: China, Soviet Union (now Russia), France, the United Kingdom, the United States, and 10 non-permeant members that are elected every two years from the General Assembly. Each of these 15 states has one vote and the permanent member states can veto any substantive issue.
United Nations - Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) 2023
There are 54 members who are voted in and out by the General Assembly. They vote on all things that involve the world economy and social issues.
They have a five-year term, are nominated by the Security Council, and elected by the General Assembly. The Secretary General is elected from states that aren't as powerful so there is proper global representation. António Guterres is the current Secretary General.
Peace Palace, International Court of Justice of the United Nations 2023
The ICJ is the world court in the UN. There are 15 justices, who each have 9 year terms. They don't have much power, they mostly just advise countries.
The United Nations is a lot more complex than what I've described here, but after reading this you'll know more than the average American about the UN.
When we hear the word 'journal' I think most of us are brought back to our elementary school days and remember all of our "dear diary" moments. However, journaling has a lot of benefits, but it can be hard to start, especially if you don't have a specific reason for why you are journaling. One of the best things about it is that it is a great way to relieve stress and anxiety. Sometimes just the act of writing your thoughts out can help you feel relief. If you are contemplating starting a journal, here are 25 prompts to help you out!
I hope these prompts can help you. Happy journaling!
